The Puerto Rico Vacation Is More Popular Than Ever

By: Caribbean Journal Staff - April 10, 2024

Tourism has been white-hot in Puerto Rico largely since the heart of the pandemic, and the island continues to see sizzling growth, according to the latest passenger traffic numbers from San Juan’s Luis Munoz Marin International Airport.

Passenger traffic in San Juan totaled just over 1.16 million in March, a 16 percent jump compared to the same month in 2023.

That was buoyed by what continues to be surging international traffic, as San Juan keeps adding new rotes both from Europe and from within the Caribbean.

International traffic was up 27 percent last month, rising to just under 120,000 in March.

Domestic traffic, still the engine of the island’s tourism growth, grew by 14.9 percent, with demand holding strong and carriers continuing to add new flights to San Juan’s air hub.

For the year, Puerto Rico’s main airport has recorded passenger traffic of 3.2 million, up 12.2 percent from the first quarter of last year, according to ASUR, which manages the airport as part of a broader regional portfolio.
