Haiti’s government is launching an appeal for emergency humanitarian aid to the country to help deliver relief to the almost 2 million people in the country affected by Hurricane Sandy.

The “flash appeal,” which would unlock special funds for immediate recovery and operates through the circuits of the United Nations, was announced by the office of Haiti Prime Minister Laurent Lamothe.

Haiti’s Prime Minister reiterated what he said was a “firm commitment” by the Martelly-Lamothe government to help affected populations and support Haitian families.

The appeal was launched jointly with Haiti’s partners in the international community.

Haiti is currently under a one-month state of emergency declared by the government following a meeting of the Council of Ministers at the end of October.

Sandy killed at least 60 people in Haiti, according to UN data.
