The Dominican Republic’s sizzling 2022 continued last month with yet another arrivals record broken, Caribbean Journal has learned. 

The country reported 561,323 tourist arrivals in May, the most of any May in the destination’s history. 

Indeed, that total was 11 percent more than May 2018 and six percent more than May 2019. (It was 44 percent higher than May 2021). 

For the year, the Dominican Republic has reported nearly 3 million visitors so far. 

Around 71 percent of visitors came from North America and within the Caribbean, joined by 16 percent from Europe, according to data from the Dominican Republic Ministry of Tourism. 

Looking ahead, officials say forward bookings are up 13.5 percent for the summer compared to the same period in 2019. 

That number is even stronger for the upcoming winter tourist season, with reservations almost 58 percent higher than at the end of 2019. 

The country is projecting 7 million visitors this year, which would also be an all-time record for the country.
