Cancun Airport Traffic Nearing 2019 Levels

By: Caribbean Journal Staff - September 11, 2021

Cancun International Airport continues to see a strong rebound, according to the latest numbers from operator ASUR.

The airport reported passenger traffic of 2.061 million in August, just 4.9 percent below the same total in 2019.

It did represent a 151.5 percent jump over August 2020, however.

For the year, Cancun International Airport has recorded passenger traffic of just under 14 million, a 21.6 percent decline compared to the first nine months of 2019 (and an 81.6 percent improvement over the first nine months of 2020).

The numbers are in line with what has been a very strong 2021 for the Mexican Caribbean amid the pandemic, buoyed largely by the loosest travel restrictions of any destination in the wider region.

ASUR manages a total of nine airports across Mexico, along with San Juan, Puerto Rico’s Luis Munoz Marin International Airport.
