The Coolest Hotel in Jamaica Is Back

By: Alexander Britell - April 30, 2021

For years, it’s been one of the most beloved — and unique — places to stay in Jamaica: Geejam, the Port Antonio signature that’s equal parts boutique resort and music and cultural hub, a sought-after hotel and recording studio tucked where the rainforest meets the beach.

And now what’s almost certainly the coolest hotel in Jamaica is back — and bigger.

The hotel just reopened after a property-wide expansion and upgrade, headlined by the addition of 12 new “Rumba Rooms,” all designed by award-winning architects Atelier Vidal.

One of the new “Rumba Rooms.”

Each room is named after a Jamaican music legend, from Augustus Pablo to the famous Jolly Boys, the latter the legendary Mento band that’s long called Geejam home.

The expansion also included a revamp for Geejam’s open-air Bushbar, which has added a new venue stage for live music events and the famous guest who often frequent the property’s Geejam Studios.

Bushbar’s got a new menu, too, with “local classics and flavors with a modern twist.”

That’s along with a new Beach Bar and Grill called “Bentley’s Yaad,” set on Geejam’s private beach.

And then there’s the centerpiece:  a sparkling new infinity pool that’s “perched in the rainforest overlooking the Caribbean Sea,” according to the property.

The culmination of the project will be the relaunch of the new Geejam Studios, which is in the midst of its first complete renovation since opening back in 1998; the new Geejam Studios will reopen later this year, the property said.

“It’s been 30 years since buying a small holiday villa in what I consider to be the most beautiful region in the world, Portland, Jamaica,” says GeeJam co-owner Jon Baker.  “I never imagined in that time, owning this property that would eventually become Geejam in 2008, would be the catalyst for our mission to inspire the Port Antonio renaissance.”

Jamaica has been open for tourism since last summer. You can find more on how to visit here
