JetBlue Is Adding a New Caribbean Destination: Guyana

By: Caribbean Journal Staff - October 27, 2020

JetBlue is set to launch its newest route to the broader Caribbean on Dec. 11, Caribbean Journal has learned.

The New York City-based carrier is launching its first-ever service from New York to Guyana, with flights up to four times each week on JetBlue’s Airbus A321neo flights.

Guyana set at the northern tip of South America, is the seat of CARICOM, the Caribbean Community.

“JetBlue is a leading airline in Latin America and the Caribbean and we remain committed to expanding our route map to Guyana as demand returns and border restrictions ease across the region,” said Andrea Lusso, vice president route planning. “Guyana service introduces a diverse and underserved destination to the JetBlue route map, and a very important one for New York City. Our nonstop service will benefit a variety of travelers – especially those visiting friends and relatives – and provide our industry-leading experience to travelers this holiday season.”

The airline’s newest nonstop route to the region takes about five hours in the air.

Guyana’s becomes the carrier’s 40th destination in the Caribbean and Latin America.

Prior to the pandemic, Guyana had been seeing steady growth in its tourism sector, buoyed by new hotel investment in the capital, Georgetown, and increased awareness of the country’s strong eco-tourism offerings.

In a statement, the carrier said the new route was made possible by the A321neo’s “extended range and fuel efficiency.”

Indeed, at five hours, it’s one of the carrier’s longest routes.

The route had initially been scheduled to launch in September of last year.
