Marriott to Continue Puerto Rico Expansion

By: Caribbean Journal Staff - March 3, 2020

Marriott is continuing its expansion in Puerto Rico with plans for the island’s first-ever Residence Inn by Marriott hotel.

The 231-room hotel will be set in the beach neighborhood of Isla Verde in San Juan — it will also be the first new-branded property in the area in almost three decades.

News of the project come as Marriott just opened its first-ever Aloft hotel in Puerto Rico, the Aloft San Juan, earlier this month.

It would be Marriott’s second property in Isla Verde, along with the existing Courtyard San Juan.

Marriott also has the Ritz-Carlton, San Juan, in Isla Verde, but that property has been shuttered since Hurricane Maria and the company has not revealed its future plans.

The $50 million project is being developed by Interlink, which has tapped Álvarez-Díaz & Villalón for its design.

“Featuring a contemporary layered façade, the building’s I-shape design maximizes the use of space and embraces visitors entering from the south, while the north side is built close to the sidewalk to emphasize the walkability of the area,” said Ricardo Álvarez-Díaz, co-founder and chairman of AD&V.

Amenities at the project will include a pool, a playground with a water features, an indoor-outdoor bar, a meeting space and a complete gym.

Every unit at the property will feature a full kitchen, a work area with a desk and a separate living space, in keeping with the Residence Inn brand philosophy.

The property will also be home to a 4,000-square-foot restaurant space.

“The hotel’s interiors will embrace the culture and spirit of the local community. We want to make sure there is a sense of place – that this is a Residence Inn IN Puerto Rico – and we have commissioned pieces from local artists that will be on display throughout the space,” said Cristina Villalón, Managing Principal and Interior Designer of AD&V.
