How Nevis’ Oualie Beach Is Getting Greener

One of Nevis’ top beach resorts is making a major move to get greener.

The island’s Oualie Beach Resort has made the switch to 100 percent biodegradable products.

The Nevis resort’s initiative extends to everything from compostable takeaway containers, T-shirt bags, disposable cups and cutlery.

“We are proud that Oualie Beach Resort is one of the first hotels in the region to take this important step in reducing waste that is harmful to our environment, and we invite others to do the same,” said Faith Bertie, the resort’s General Manager.

Oualie Beach Resort is a 32-room, family-owned, eco-friendly boutique hotel.

The resort said that plastic and styrofoam food service supplies may take centuries to break down, leaving communities with high levels of litter and landfills brimming with single-use items which often end up polluting the ocean.

The supplies that Oualie Beach Resort has sourced are made from plant starch and fibers that are fully compostable or contain a microbial additive that accelerates biodegradable breakdown.

Here’s hoping the rest of the region follows suit.
