A Great Little Food Kiosk in Martinique

By: Caribbean Journal Staff - December 14, 2016

It’s hidden on the road to Habitation Clement, a daily staple of Le Francois in Martinique.

It’s also one of Martinique’s best-kept secrets.

It would be so easy to drive right by this little stall next to a supermarket — but if you look closely and learn from long lines, you’ll get out, wait your turn and be deliciously surprised.

This is Le Kiosque, one of the most popular lunch spots in the small town of Le Francois, and it’s popular for a reason: the prices are low, the service is friendly and the food is, well, outstanding.

Now, this isn’t anything fancy — even for an island where the simplest of dishes are usually plated like a Matisse — it’s simple, delicious creole cooking with a wide menu.

The star the day we went? The cote de veau — juicy, tender, slathered in incredible gravy, the sauce fusing perfectly with the pommes frites.

And that’s without even sitting on a table — indeed, on this afternoon we ate lunch on a stone bench across from a church.

And somehow, every patron of Le Kiosque, walking by us, uniformly said “bon appetit.”

Only in Martinique.
