A New Malecon in Puerto Rico

By: Caribbean Journal Staff - September 4, 2016

There’s a new malecon in Puerto Rico.

Puerto Rico Governor Alejandro García Padilla has inaugurated the new Malecón de Patillas, one of the projects that is part of the rehabilitation plan for levees and towns in different municipalities around Puerto Rico.

The initiative, which amounts to a total investment of $26.5 million, is an important source of economic development that will inject energy into the towns whose public spaces it has revitalized, the Governor said.

“This was done for you, to be enjoyed in community, both those who live in this town and its visitors,” Padilla Garcia said. “Similarly, for traders who have their stalls here have better opportunities to take their businesses forward and give a new impetus to the quality of life in this region.”

Improvements on the boardwalk in Patillas, which total an estimated investment of $2.5 million, include the rehabilitation of existing bathrooms, improvements to the observation tower, gazebos, parking, volleyball courts, construction of a platform, lighting, furniture and rehabilitation of kiosks, and the construction of six new bathrooms.

During the construction phase, 30 direct jobs were created.
