Haiti and Mexico have signed a bilateral agreement aimed at investment promotion and protection.

The agreement was signed last week by Haiti Industry Minister Jude Hervey Day and Mexico Economy Minister Ildefonso Guajardo Villarreal.

The signing was witnessed by Haiti President Michel Martelly and Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto.

It is the first such agreement Haiti has signed with a country in Latin America and the Caribbean.

The deal follows a visit by a Mexican business mission to Port-au-Prince April 29.

Both leaders stressed their Mexico’s support for Haiti in the development of comprehensive reconstruction projects in urban areas, through the Infrastructure Fund for Central American countries and the Caribbean, as well as a Scholarship Program.

The two countries have been particularly cooperative in the area of tourism, with a number of bilateral accords in the last few years.

Martelly visited Mexico last week.
