Tobago will be part of the CREWS international coral reef early warning system, according to Godwin Williams, secretary of agriculture, marine affairs, marketing and the environment in the Tobago House of Assembly.

Tobago’s participation will mean the installation of specially-manufactured buoys at the Buccoo Reef in southwest Tobago, and the reef offshore Speyside in eastern Tobago.

The buoys will monitor climate chnage, coral bleaching and changes in reefs, along with identifying any damage done to them and other marine activities around the island, Adams said.

The data would then be transmitted to a location at the Buccoo Training Centre. That data would then be transmitted to the Caribbean and globally.

The first buoy will be installed at Buccoo on Wednesday, and at Speyside on Nov. 15.
