Cuba Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez Parrilla arrived in Mexico City this week for a two-day visit.

Parrilla, who had prevoiulsy been in New York to vsiit the UN General Assembly, will be meeting with his Mexican counterpart, Jose Antonio Meade, and will be giving a lecture at the Ministry of Foreign Relations.

Mexico has been looking to strengthen ties with its neighbours on the Caribbean sea, most notably through a visit by then-President Felipe Calderon to a CARICOM-Mexico summit in Barbados in 2012.

That continues to be the case for Mexico’s new President, Enrique Pena Neito, who has said improving the country’s relationship within the region is a major priority.

Meade himself visited Cuba in September, when he met with Cuban leader Raul Castro.

Trade between Cuba and Mexico topped $400 million last year, according to government data.
