Bermuda’s One Bermuda Alliance has returned to power following a victory in Bermuda’s election, continuing a strong regional trend in favour of opposition parties.

The OBA, led by Craig Cannonier, won 19 of 36 seats in the island’s House of Assembly, ousting the Progressive Labour Party after three terms.

The PLP had held 24 seats heading into the election. The OBA had held just 10 before the election.

The relatively new OBA won a total of 15,949 votes, or 51.7 percent of the vote; the PLP took 46.1 percent of the vote, with 14,218 votes, according to Bermuda’s Elections office.

Independent candidates won 695 votes but no seats.

The victory means Cannonier, who won the election for the Devonshire South Central constituency, will be Bermuda’s new Premier.

It means the end of the term for Paula Cox, who had served as Premier since October 2010.
