A three-year project aimed at reflecting on 50 years of Jamaican and Trinidadian independence culminated Monday with the launch of the SALISES 50-50 Conference in Kingston.
The conference: Fifty Fifty: Critical Reflections in a Time of Uncertainty, is hosted by the Sir Arthur Lewis Institute for Social and Economic Studies and is being held at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel in Kingston from Aug. 20 to Aug. 24.
Some plenary speakers include Professor Selwyn Ryan, former Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness, Jamaican Finance Minister Dr Peter Phillips and St Vincent and the Grenadines Prime Minister Dr Ralph Gonsalves, among others.
Sessions at the conference are covering topics ranging from Caribbean health to he British-Jamaican diaspora.
The film also includes screenings of the films Black Friday and Ghett’a Life.
More than 150 abstracts for papers were submitted to the conference.
