The Bahamas has signed a pair of contracts for roads projects on the islands of San Salvador and Inagua.

In San Salvador, the government signed a $587,523 contract to repair and reconstruct roads on the island, where residents have endured a number of challenges due to poor road conditions, according to Deputy Chief Councillor Jonathan Knowles.

The project includes full reconstruction of the 1.6-mile road between Cockburn Town and Sandy Point, and localised repairs and pothole remediation on the section of the road north of the airport, a 4.9-mile stretch.

“We expect the completed works will be of a consistently high standard, within the agreed timeframe and within budget,” said Works Minister Neko Grant.

In Inagua, the government signed a $3.85 million contract with Symonette Enterprises to reconstruct and repair roads in Matthew Town.

The scope of the work includes clearing of 60,589 yards of street verges, reconstruction of 5.4 miles of roads and the application of patch and seal to 11.4 miles of settlement roads.

“These works are being advanced as part of the overall effort to enhance public infrastructure throughout the islands of the Bahamas,” Grant said.

The Bahamas is currently undertaking a large-scale infrastructure project on the main island of New Providence as well.
