American Airlines Just Added a New Destination: Governor’s Harbour, Eleuthera

By: Alexander Britell - February 5, 2024

Pink sand beaches, lovely little boutique hotels, centuries of Bahamian history. And did we mention Tippy’s?

There’s a reason why Governor’s Harbour in Eleuthera has become one of the hottest destinations in The Bahamas. Now, it’s easier to get there than ever before.

American Airlines has officially launched its first-ever flights between Miami and Governor’s Harbour, its second nonstop route to Eleuthera (joining existing service to North Eleuthera International Airport) and an important new connection for the fast-growing destination.

The new flights will be operating twice weekly between Miami and Governor’s Harbour, with service on Tuesdays and Saturdays.

“This new airlift, just one month into 2024, underscores a holistic approach and unwavering
commitment of the Ministry to aggressively expand airlift into our 16 island destinations,” said Bahamas Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Tourism Chester Cooper.

Governor’s Harbour has been quietly seeing strong growth in recent years, with travelers drawn to the area for its unique blend of pristine beaches, boutique hotels and historic charm.

That includes resorts like the French Leave (part of Marriott’s Autograph Collection) and boutique resorts like Pineapple Fields and La Bougainvillea, among others.

The new flight also makes it significantly easier for travelers looking to travel to southern Eleuthera, home to several high-profile projects (including a golf resort community that will have courses by Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus) and one of the most legendary resorts in The Bahamas: Cape Eleuthera, which just expanded with a collection of toes-in-the-sand beach bungalows.

The Bahamas recently completed a series of renovations to Governor’s Harbour Airport, with upgrades to both the departure and arrival terminals.

American Airlines now flies to six different destinations in The Bahamas, including Nassau, North Eleuthera, Grand Bahama, Exuma and Abaco.

“We are excited to celebrate the launch of our sixth destination in The Bahamas, Governor’s Harbour,
further strengthening our commitment to this unspoiled paradise. This new route marks our next step
as we continue to expand American’s presence in the Caribbean and Atlantic, where we are proud to
lead as the largest U.S. airline,” said José María Giraldo, American Airlines Managing Director of
Operations for Mexico, the Caribbean and Central America.

Part of American’s expansion has been a new focus on smaller, underserved airports in the Caribbean, where the carrier has been quickly adding routes on Embraer 175 aircraft. Governor’s Harbour is the latest in a series of smaller destinations that now have American flights, including Anguilla, the British Virgin Islands, Dominica and, soon, Ocho Rios, Jamaica.
