There’s a New Way to Get to This Sought-After Caribbean Island

By: Alexander Britell - November 16, 2023

Little Dix Bay. The Baths. Spanish Town. The Bitter End. They’re some of the most sought-after, evocative, beloved places in the Caribbean, and they’re all set on one tiny island: Virgin Gorda in the British Virgin Islands.

But Virgin Gorda has always been relatively remote, lacking nonstop flights from the US, with just sporading service to its rather small landing strip.

Thanks to leading luxury airline Tradewind Aviation, it just got a whole lot easier to fly there.

Tradewind Aviation has officially launched new service between San Juan, Puerto Rico and Virgin Gorda, opening up the little island to the vast network of major airlines that serve the Puerto Rican capital.

The new San Juan-Virgin Gorda flights, which take about 35 minutes, will be operating four time each week, with flights on Mondays, Thursdays, Fridays, Sundays and Mondays.

The route will run for the peak travel season, lasting through April 8, 2024, according to the company.

Tradewind is operating the flights on its fleet of Pilatus PC-12 aircraft, the same planes its uses to service other luxury destinations with like St Barth and Anguilla, among others. The flights are semi-private, meaning all of the benefits of private air travel in a shared charter configuration. That includes access to Tradewind’s VIP lounge at San Juan’s Luis Munoz Marin International Airport.

Virgin Gorda, home to what’s long been considered the Caribbean’s “billionaire’s playground,” the North Sound, has seen a spike in travel demand since the pandemic, as more and more high-net-worth travelers covet the island for its blend of luxury, low density and rarefied seclusion (along with one of the Caribbean’s top yachting scenes).

That includes top hotels like the aforementioned Rosewood Little Dix Bay, the Bitter End Yacht Club and Saba Rock to smaller retreats like the new Cornucopia and an impressive collection of luxury villas, from WIMCO and Virgin Gorda Villa Rentals to the residential community at Oil Nut Bay. That’s without mentioning private-island destinations like Sir Richard Branson’s Necker Island and Moskito Island and the emerging Eustatia Island.
