The Bahamas Has a New Museum of Junkanoo

By: Caribbean Journal Staff - July 7, 2023

It’s the most vibrant, dynamic (and certainly loudest) art form in The Bahamas: Junkanoo, the national celebration that is a focal point of the holiday season and an essential part of celebrations across the archipelago year round.

Now, Junkanoo has its own national museum.

The country’s first-ever Museum of Junkanoo officially opened at the new-look Nassau Cruise Port, one that officials hope will help draw even more attention to something that is a huge part of The Bahamas’ cultural identity, one headlined by major parades on Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.

“Junkanoo of course is a truly spectacular event that never fails to amaze.  It is one of our favourite pastimes that we all recognize,” said Bahamas Deputy Prime Minister and Tourism Minister Chester Cooper. “We have included it in all of our major events whether it is a Christening, funeral, party, graduation, holiday or homecoming.”

Cooper, who was speaking at the official inauguration of the new museum, said “We have a duty to protect it, whether it is the government, individuals, corporate or all who love our country and all who love our culture.”

Millions of cruise visitors arrive in Nassau each year, and they will now be able to experience a taste of Junkanoo, learning about its history, meaning and significance to the country.
