Cancun is seeing a full-fledged surge in air passenger traffic, according to new data from Mexico-based ASUR, which manages Cancun International Airport.

The Mexican Caribbean hotspot reported passenger traffic of 2.617 million in April, which represented a 59.6 percent increase compared to April 2021.

More crucially, it represented a 16.2 percent increase compared to April 2019, nearly a year before the onset of the pandemic.

For the year, Cancun’s passenger traffic is 9.659 million, representing a 74.8 percent increase compared to the first four months of 2021.

That’s also 8.4 percent higher than the same period in 2019 — not a surprise, given the destinations continued tourism demand and strong airlift growth amid the pandemic.
