One of the Caribbean’s most celebrated sailing events is back for the first time since the onset of the pandemic.

The Island Water World Grenada Sailing Week is set for this weekend with a new program by the Petite Calivigny Yacht Club, set at the Camper and Nicholson Port Louis Marina.

Grenada Sailing week was first run in 2013, having since become an institution that highlights the beauty of Grenada and Carriacou and the area’s appeal and attraction as a prominent Caribbean sailing destination.

This year’s edition features three coastal races across both Grenada and Carriacou.

Day one is a race from Grenada to Carriacou, supported by the Grenada Tourism Authority.

The second day sees the action head to Carriacou for the Tyrrel Bay Boatyard and Marina Round Island race.

And the third and final day of racing is a Mount Gay Rum Carriacou to Grenada race.

“The PCYC always runs an annual coastal race and this year the club has teamed up with Grenada Sailing Week,” said Carol Gorvette, commodore of the Petite Calivigny Yacht Club. “The emphasis is most definitely on fun, the fleet are really looking forward to the beautiful scenery and a regatta with a destination, especially Carriacou which is a beautiful island with a rich heritage is sailing and boat building.”

Four classes will be racing, with eight performance cruisers and race boats in CSA 1, with the largest entry Peter Anthony’s Antigua Farr65 Spirit of Juno.

There is an international match race in the multihull class with David Slater’s Toronto team racing Outremer 45 Delphine against Stephan Bourne’s Royal Hong Kong YC team on Rapido 60 Ineffable.

The nine-strong Classic Class features six Carriacou Sloops, the biggest gathering of the traditional wooden boats in years. The oldest entry in the Classic Class is a sloop called the Blue Peter that first launched in 1930.

Sailors from at least 11 different nations are racing at what is the ninth edition of Grenada Sailing Week.
