Silversea Launches Construction on Hybrid Cruise Ship

By: Caribbean Journal Staff - December 3, 2021

Luxury cruise brand Silversea has launched construction on its newest ship: Silver Nova.

The ship, which is being built at Meyer Werft, is set for delivery in the summer of 2023.

Notably, it’s the first-ever hybrid-powered luxury cruise ship, one that will be free of local emissions at port, according to the company.

Overall, the hybrid technology, which will feature fuel cells and batteries, will allow the ship to achieve an overall 40 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions per suite.

“Our Nova class ships represent a significant investment in unprecedented technological solutions. They support our mission to preserve the planet without compromising on comfort or luxury,” says Roberto Martinoli, President and CEO of Silversea Cruises. “Silver Nova is the manifestation of Silversea and Royal Caribbean Group’s long-term commitment to sustainability.”

Silversea says Silver Nova will also be one of the most spacious cruises ships ever built, with a travel capacity of 728 guests and a gross tonnage of 54,700 tons.

The construction launch comes amid increasing competition in the luxury cruise space, most notably from the soon-to-debut Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection.

“Sustainability is the future of luxury travel and the name Silver Nova is representative of the incredible innovation of Silversea’s luxury,” added Barbara Muckermann, Chief Commercial Officer. “Silversea is already a leader in environmentally conscious travel and now, with Silver Nova, we will go even further to meet the expectations of both today’s and tomorrow’s luxury traveler.”
