Hilton Advances Caribbean Hotel Expansion in Cancun

By: Caribbean Journal Staff - February 19, 2019

Hilton has big plans in the Mexican Caribbean, and now the travel giant is adding yet another hotel in the region.

Hilton has announced plans to open the Caribbean’s first Canopy by Hilton hotel, with the Canopy by Hilton Cancun La Isla slated to make its debut in late 2019.

It’s the first Canopy in Mexico and the second in Latin America, with a focus on what the company said would be “local design, art, food, drink and social areas.”

The hotel will be located in the largest shopping center in Cancun, the Isla Mall, with a total of 175 guest rooms adjacent to La Isla’s Fashion Harbour luxury wing.

The new opening is part of a wider Mexico expansion Hilton announced on Tuesday that includes a new Hilton-branded hotel in Monterrey and two Curio Collection by Hilton properties in Mexico City.

“With Mexico a constant priority in our regional expansion plans, we have gravitated toward Monterrey and Cancun as the cities represent two of the most active markets in the country,” said Juan Corvinos, vice president, development, Caribbean and Latin America at Hilton. “The demands and preferences of today’s travelers continue to evolve, and we are creating a new guest experience by introducing new brands and properties for business and leisure travelers alike.”

The new Cancun hotel is part of a wider Caribbean push by Hilton, one that accompanies a high-profile strategic alliance with Playa Hotels and Resorts, one that saw the debut in 2018 of the Hilton Playa del Carmen.

It should be noted that the new Canopy-branded hotel will not be an all-inclusive, however, and is unrelated to the Playa alliance.

Hilton has a total of 60 hotels in Mexico.
