A New Place to Dive in Bimini

By: Caribbean Journal Staff - May 29, 2017

There’s another great new spot to dive in the Bimini archipelago of the Bahamas.

The Bimini Scuba Center has sunk four vessels of various sizes and styles off of North Bimini, creating a future artificial reef and shipwreck site for divers.

After raising an estimated half-million dollars, Neal Watson and the collaborative efforts of Resolve Marine, Key Construction and Shannon Bullard & The Rock Shed Crew successfully sunk the four vessels in the same vicinity in approximately 85 feet of water.

Divers and marine life alike will soon enjoy the new wreck site called The Coach Sugar Memorial Dive Site, after Bimini’s chief youth mentor, Grathen “Sugar” Robins.

The site is the new home of the 165 ft. long J.P. Kipp Barge, the 90 ft. long Tug Manatee, a 70 ft. long Landing Craft, and an unnamed 30 ft. Cuban Refugee Boat.

“These artificial reefs provide a great sanctuary for undersea critters, help establish coral growth and recruitment, as well as being an awesome playground for scuba divers and water enthusiasts,” said underwater cameraman and former Bimini Biological Field Station Manager, Duncan Brake.

The Bimini Scuba Center is based at the Bimini Big Game Club & Marina.
