Cape Air Launches New Flights to the Bahamas (On a Seaplane)

By: Caribbean Journal Staff - March 5, 2016

It’s one of the region’s quickest flights — and also one of the coolest.

Cape Air, the US-based carrier that has long had a hub in Puerto Rico, has expanded its operations to Florida.

Now the carrier is offering three daily roundtrip flights from Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport to Bimini on a Cessna 208 Caravan seaplane.

The flights are a partnership between Cape Air and Resorts World Bimini, meaning the seaplane lands directly at the Hilton hotel at Resorts World (except on windier days when the plane lands at South Bimini International Airport).

But the best part is on the way back: when you land in Fort Lauderdale, you don’t land at the commercial terminal. You land at Sheltair Aviation, the private jet terminal, meaning the shortest US immigration line you’ll likely ever experience (and yes, there is Global Entry, too).

Better still, Cape Air will soon be launching Bimini flights directly from Miami’s Watson Island seaplane base.

Here’s what it’s like:
