By: Caribbean Journal Staff - January 31, 2016 - 8:59 pm

Cancun just set a record.

The Mexican Caribbean destination reported more than 5 million visitors in 2015, breaking its previous record of 4.8 million, set in 2014.

Cancun’s hotel occupancy rate also reached an all-time high of 82 percent, according to data from the Cancun and Puerto Morelos Hotel Association.

That came even after the addition of 700 new hotel rooms to the area.

“We are thrilled to report yet another record-breaking year for tourism in Cancun,“ said Jesus Almaguer, CEO of the Cancun Convention and Visitors Bureau. “We look forward to start off the year in such a positive direction and welcome the newest additions to Cancun that will enhance the destination’s already robust tourism offerings.”

Cancun’s international airport recently underwent a major expansion of two of its terminals, with another expansion planned for a third terminal.

The destination has also been boosted by an increase in airlift from airlines like Frontier, American and Vacation Express.

Cancun is the largest tourism destination in Mexico and is neck-and-neck with the Dominican Republic as the region’s largest tourism destination by arrival numbers. (The Dominican Republic has not yet released its full tourism data for 2015).
