The Best Way to Spend New Year’s Eve in the Caribbean

By: Caribbean Journal Staff - December 5, 2015 - 5:49 pm

There are great parties across the Caribbean on New Year’s Eve.

But if you want to experience the ultimate island experience, the one that you’ll always remember, there’s simply one option: Old Year’s Night.

It’s an annual, legendary fete held at Foxy’s Beach Bar on Jost Van Dyke in the British Virgin Islands — a mix of rum, music, dancing, theatrics and, well, a lot more rum.

And this year is no different.

Barbados-based NexCyx, a pop-dance-alternative-hip-hop band, will headline the event, taking the stage around 11 PM and helping to ring in the New Year.

They’ll be joined by BVI favorite Final Faze, who will launch the music in Foxy’s “Outback” area around 8 PM.

This year’s lineup includes Tortola’s DJ Dre, the BVI Intrigue Dance Troupe, Mocko Jumbies and even a fire dancer.

US Virgin Islander and MTV/BET comedian Buttahman will serve as the event’s host, with DJ Avalanche keeping the party going into 2016.

And, naturally, you’ll have to take the edge off with some of Foxy’s Firewater Rum.

General admission to the bar and Foxy’s “Outback” is free and open to the public, although Foxy’s also offers a premium six-course dinner with open bar and a VIP section.

This year’s Old Year’s Night has a space theme, with “futuristic, daring or barely-there costumes” encouraged; an outer space foam party will be held, along with the construction of a small above-ground pool.

It’s been more than three decades since Foxy’s Bar held its first Old Year’s Night, turning an island with just 300-year-round residents into a venue with thousands of people.

And if you’re not taking your own boat or a charter, there are ferries and water taxies to Jost from St Thomas, St John and Tortola throughout the night.
