Canada, Guyana Agree on Gold Mining

By: Caribbean Journal Staff - August 22, 2011 - 5:25 pm

The Canadian International Development Agency and Guyana’s Geology and Mines Commission signed an agreement today to improve Guyana’s technical capacity for gold mining, along with introducing cyanide leaching technology.

Guyanese Prime Miniseter Samuel Hinds was joined for the signing in Liliendaal by Raymond Drouin, CIDA’s head of development cooperation of Guyana and Suriname.

The project will be funded by both agencies at a total cost of $339,326.

Last month, Guyana announced a plan to target illegal gold mining in the country, partnering with neighbors Suriname and French Guiana on the initiative.
