Turkey has made no secret of its desire to deepen its relationship with the Caribbean, and the country is continuing that push with a new initiative in Dominica.

Dominica announced that Turkey would be donating 50 computers to the country’s Ministry of Agriculture as part of the island’s goal of making advancements in the information and communication technology sector.

“We are living in an age of technology and ICT is everything and we have an opportunity, with this equipment, to improve the flow of information; to do analyses more speedily,” said Harold Guiste, permanent secretary in Dominica’s Ministry of Agriculture.

While it’s not a large donation, it seems to be modeled on the kind of initiatives that China has been taking in the region for several years — which have included significant donations of computers and other technological devices.

The 50 computers will be distributed across seven agricultural regions in Dominica.

According to Ricky Brumant, director of Agriculture, the Ministry will be continuing discussions with the Turkish government to “identify other areas of development in the Agriculture Division.”
