Grenada’s government is building reverse osmosis desalination plants on the islands of Carriacou and Petite Martinique.

The projects are being funded by the CARICOM Climate Change Centre, and Mark Bynoe, an environmental economist with the organization, is currently in Grenada overseeing the setting of the plants.

The project is being executed locally in partnership with the Grenada National Water and Sewerage Authority and the Grenada Electricity Services (GRENLEC).

According to Bynoe, both plants should be up and running by September ,although in the short term water distribution will be focused on the town of Hillsborough in Carriacou.

Carriacou’s plant will be set up on the location of the former desalination plant in Seaview.

Today, people in Petite Martnique and Carriacou depend on the harvesting of rainwater to meet their water needs.
