Bermuda is mourning the loss of former Premier Sir David Gibbons, who passed away last week.

Gibbons, who was 85, served as Premier of Bermuda from 1977 to 1982, when he also served as the British Overseas Territory’s Minister of Finance.

Gibbons, one of the major figures in the history of modern Bermuda, was the leader of the United Bermuda Party during the same period of time.

Gibbons also spent much time in the Bahamas, where he was the driving force behind the Atlantic Medical insurance company.

“I was saddened to learn of the passing of Sir David Gibbons, former Premier and Minister of Finance of Bermuda, long-time investor in the Bahamian economy and for a lengthy period a resident of The Bahamas as well,” Bahamas Prime Minister Perry Christie said in a statement. “On behalf of the Government and people of The Bahamas, and on my own behalf, I extend condolences to Sir David’s bereaved family and to the Government and people of Bermuda.”

Gibbons was also the first major regional leader to grant a feature interview to Caribbean Journal, in June of 2011.
