Dominica Marks 35 Years of Independence

Dominica marks its 35th anniversary of independence Sunday.

The island became an independent nation on Nov. 3, 1978. Dominica had been an Associated State of the United Kingdom since 1967.

In a statement, United States Secretary of State John Kerry congratulated the country on behalf of US President Barack Obama.

“The United States and Dominica are united through our shared commitment to democracy, peace, and development,” Kerry wrote. “Through the Caribbean Basin Security Initiative, we work together to enhance the security and prosperity of our nations and the region.”

On Friday, Dominica celebrated “Flag Day,” as part of the independence celebrations.
