After 20 Years, Bahamas and Cuba Reach Agreement on Maritime Border

Following 20 years of negotiations, the Bahamas and Cuba have reached an agreement on their maritime border, according to Minister of Foreign Affairs Brent Symonette. Symonette would not confirm when the matter would definitively be addressed, however. The maritime border is required by the global Convention on the Law of the Sea, but is all the more important due to recent Bahamian inroads in the offshore oil industry, something that is concomitantly being pursued by Cuba off of its own shore. The two countries had reached an agreement in principle last month. [Nassau Tribune]
