Dominica is embarking on a project to install solar street lights across the country.

The project, which will involve the installation of 4851 solar lights, will be supported by the government of China, which has agreed to provide 2500 of the lights.

“The Prime Minister has been able to use his good office to seek funding and assistance from the People’s Republic of China,” said Public Works Minister Rayburn Blackmoore in a government release. “We are in the process of launching a comprehensive National Street Lighting project that will seek to bring solar lights to all our main roads in Dominica including urban areas.”

The project, which will be completed in separate phases, should take about 33 months to complete, Blackmoore said.

“What we intend to do is first of all address our main roads. During the first phase, we intend to install 2500 solar street lights,” he said. “That will significantly improve the security and safety of our roads for pedestrians and persons who use the road.”
