A series of improvement projects on Canouan Island in the Grenadines will total $11.1 million over the next two years, according to the government.

The development of the Charles Bay area on Canouan proposes a new ring road, the relocation of the market and library, a senior centre, anew water fountains and the construction of a commercial jetty and a community wharf.

More than 100 local residents were recently on hand to examine the proposed plans, which were presented by Elena Korach, chief operating officer of Canouan Resorts Development (CRD Holding).

The government said the residents “generally” accepted the proposed plans, although they suggested possible changes to individual aspects.

The developers plan to hold another consultation, which would be the third thus far, near the end of the year.

Construction is scheduled to begin in early 2014.

CRD holds a 99-year lease agreement with the government of St Vincent and the Grenadines on Canouan Island that it signed in 1990.
