Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce won the gold in the women’s 100M at the World Championships on Monday.

Fraser-Pryce, the two-time reigning Olympic champion in the 100M, finished in 10.71, the fastest time by any woman this year.

She was followed by Cote d’Ivoire’s Murielle Ahoure and the United States’ Carmelita Jeter, who finished in 10.93 and 10.94, respectively.

It represented a significant improvement from Fraser-Pryce’s fourth-place showing at the 2011 IAAF World Championships in Daegu.

Fraser-Pryce’s strong showing comes after a disappointing month for the Caribbean’s female sprinters. The last month saw positive drug tests by fellow Jamaican Veronica Campbell-Brown and Trinidad and Tobago sprinter Kelly-Ann Baptiste.

The latter led to Baptiste’s withdrawal from Moscow.

Fraser-Pryce’s victory also gave Jamaica a sweep of the 100M, following Usain Bolt’s resounding victory on Sunday in Moscow.
