Another Hospital in Haiti Goes Solar

Following the debut of the solar-powered Mirebalais Teaching Hospital in Haiti, another hospital in the country is using the sun to harness energy.

The first phase of a solar panel power system has now been installed at Haiti’s Hospital Bernard Mevs, through a partnership with the Clinton Foundation and a group of energy companies including NRG Energy, Sunora Energy Solutions, SMA America and Unirac.

“The Clinton Foundation is continuing to support Haiti’s long-term recovery efforts and sustainable development by expanding clean energy infrastructure,” said Bruce Lindsey, chief executive officer, Clinton Foundation, in a release. “I’m pleased we’ve been able to work with NRG Energy on a new, complete solar power panel system for Hospital Bernard Mevs that will enable the hospital to provide quality health care for its patients.”

The project will help provide power for the thousands of patients treated by the hospital each year. It is accompanied by a wider energy partnership with the Clinton Global Initiative to Haiti.

“This partnership will help to ensure the talented physicians at this critical health care facility will have the reliable electricity and affordable grid independence they need to provide quality health care services to all patients,” said David Crane, president and CEO of NRG. “This project is a first step in our new partnership with the Clinton Foundation, and the participation of our solar technology partners will help us, together, advance NRG’s broader corporate strategy to alleviate energy poverty and promote cleaner energy solutions.”

The hospital has more than 140 staff members.
