Miguel Diaz-Canel, the first vice president of Cuba’s Councils of State and Ministers, led a Cuban delegation to the installation of Pope Francis in the Vatican Tuesday.

It marked the first major foreign visit for Diaz-Canel, who was elected to the post last month.

Diaz-Canel is seen by many as the potential successor to Cuba’s Raul Castro, who announced in February that he would be leaving politics at the end of his term in 2008.

The delegation included Homero Acosta Alvarez, secretary of the Council of State; Marcelino Medina Gonzalez, first deputy minister of foreign affairs and Eduardo Delgado Bermudez, Cuba’s Ambassador to the Holy See, according to Cuba’s government information agency.

Pope Francis is the first Pope born in Latin America.
