Delta Airlines Ending Service to Guyana, Citing “Poor Demand”

Delta Airlines will be ending its service to Guyana, the company confirmed to Caribbean Journal.

Delta spokesman Anthony Black said the company “will end or suspend indefinitely service beginning May 6.”

“It’s basically poor demand, a lack of demand,” Black said.

In a statement Monday, Guyana Tourism Minister Irfaan Ali said the government was “willing to work with Delta Airlines and to ensure its presence locally.”

“The problem is not with passengers, it’s in terms of their (Delta) profitability and we are still open to discussions with them and we are awaiting various options, proposals that they will submit to us so that we can examine and to see whether there is any feasible option,” he said Monday.

Guyana President Donald Ramotar had said this weekend that the move was not related to poor uptake.

Ali said the country has been in discussions with other carriers to fill the void when Delta departs.

Delta has been operating flights to Guyana out of New York City.
