The Bahamas has officially appointed Dr Eugene Newry as the country’s new Ambassador to the United Nations.

Newry received his letters of appointment from Bahamian Governor General Sir Arthur Foulkes in a ceremony at Government House in Nassau Friday.

“I am going to do what I have to do, with all of the challenges that face any representative of any country, but particularly Small Island Developing States like the Bahamas,” he said.

Newry is the country’s eighth UN Ambassador.

“I will be collaborating, which is one of my mandates, with the rest of the representatives of the Caribbean because that is the key for the Bahamas to make its mark in a world of competition and globalization,” he said. “The country cannot stand alone.”

Newry had previously served as the Bahamas’ Ambassador to Haiti from 2002 to 2007.

He succeeds Dr Paulette Bethel, who will return home to “take up new administrative responsibilities in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs,” according to the government.
