Haiti’s Martelly Heads to Cuba

Haiti President Michel Martelly, who just returned to the country from a tour of Europe, is heading to Cuba this week for a three-day visit.

The trip, which officially begins Tuesday, is aimed at revising and strengthening bilateral cooperation and “strengthening the bonds of friendship and solidarity between the two countries,” according to a statement from the National Palace.

The trip will also see the signing of several bilateral agreements in areas including health, literacy, agriculture and mechanical services — seven agreements in total.

In July, Cuba and Haiti, along with the government of Norway, signed a cooperation agreement on health care.

In March, the two countries signed three technical assistance agreements in Port-au-Prince, also dealing with the area of health.

Martelly will hold several working meetings with Cuban authorities, with one aimed at coordinating a joint meeting between Haiti and Cuba.

Haiti’s President will also lay a wreath at the foot of the statue of Jose Martí.
