Usain Bolt: “I Am Very Pleased” With Olympic Performance

Usain Bolt was honoured Tuesday for his accomplishments at the London Olympics, where he won the gold medal in the 100m and 200m races, and set an Olympic record in the 100m. He also took home gold in the men’s 4×100 relay.

“I went out there and I did my country, myself, my fans and everybody who was looking forward to me doing great things proud, and I am very happy with myself,” he said. “I am very pleased with my performance — I think I did pretty well.”

Bolt was speaking at his eponymous Usain Bolt’s Tracks and Records in Kingston.

“Usain Bolt has become the most celebrated athlete in track and field in history,” said Jamaica Sports Minister Natalie Neita-Headley, who was on hand for the press conference.

“His record accomplishments and the growth of digital and internet media has meant that millions, if not billions, follow his every performance and anxiously read every word written about this super athlete,” she said, comparing his international profile to Jamaican music legend Bob Marley.

“All this has led to a tremendous boost for Brand Jamaica, and has offered hope to many of our athletes who are still seeking sponsorship and support,” she said.

Bolt also received praise from Opposition Leader Andrew Holness and British High Commissioner to Jamaica Howard Drake.

The latter called Bolt “the greatest athlete the world has ever seen” for his contribution to the Olympics and the world of sport.
