Trinidad and Tobago finished the Olympics in golden fashion, with Keshorn Walcott winning gold in the men’s Javelin Throw.

Walcott’s top throw reached 84.58 metres, a new national record for Trinidad and enough to beat the Ukraine’s Oleksandr Pyatnytsya, who took silver, and Finland’s Antti Ruuskanen.

It was the first ever medal for Trinidad in a field event, and Trinidad and Tobago’s first gold medal since 1976 in Montreal. It is Trinidad’s second-ever gold medal.

Walcott, just 19 years of age, is a native of Toco. He came in with a personal best of 82.83, and had also won the World Junior Championships in Barcelona.

Trinidad’s 4x400m team won the bronze medal earlier in the Games, along with another bronze in the men’s 400m thanks to Lalonde Gordon.

It has won a total of three medals at the Games.
