Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce defended her Olympic title from Beijing to win the Olympic Women’s 100 metre final and bring Jamaica its first gold in London.

Jamaica won a second medal in the race as Veronica Campbell-Brown took the bronze with a time of 10.81.

Fraser-Pryce raced to the top with a time of 10.75 seconds, beating out Carmelita Jeter of the United States, who finished in 10.78.

The Caribbean had a wide field, with three of the nine lanes, including Kelly-Ann Baptiste from Trinidad. Baptiste finished sixth with a time of 10.94 seconds.

The Caribbean region has totaled seven medals thus far, although it will likely bring in more in the next few days.

Jamaica looks ahead to Sunday when its men’s side seeks a similar showing in the 100 metres.
