Dominica in Talks With British Virgin Islands Carrier on New Flight Possibilities

By: Caribbean Journal Staff - July 17, 2012

Dominica’s government is in talks with Air BVI to explore the possibilities of additional flights into Dominica.

The move comes with the scheduled phaseout of American Eagle from its San Juan, Puerto Rico base.

Among the concerns over the phaseout include its potential impact on passengers, particularly medical students trying to get into Dominica.

The base is set to close in March 2013.

“We have in fact been talking to [BVI Airways],” said Reginald Austrie, parliamentary representative for the Cottage constituency in Dominica.

Austrie said he had attended several meetings with Air BVI and Ross University to find a “tripartite arrangement/”

“I believe discussions are still ongoing in that regard, but we have our eyes on Air BVI because we see that as one of the solutions to the difficulties that we will be having when American Eagle withdraws their services from Dominica.”

Air BVI currently has six weekly flights into Dominica. American Eagle currently serves 896 seats each week from San Juan to Dominica.
