Haiti’s government graduated 20 new magistrates from the School of Magistrates Friday, the fourth class in 25 years.

Haiti President Michel Martelly participated in the ceremony, joined by members of the judiciary and representatives from countries including France and Canada, some of whom took part in training some of the judges.

“It is our responsibility to transform this nation, to put in place a system of justice and of law,” Martelly said. “The magistrates we train today to equip the legal system are the builders our society tomorrow.”

The President urged the new magistrates to commit to dispensing justice and fairness in the most honourable manner.

“The rule of law that we promised to establish will not live without this requirement,” Martelly said, citing a major priority of his administration — and of the United Nations Security Council.
