Laurent Lamothe has been confirmed by Haiti’s Chamber of Deputies as the country’s new Prime Minister.

Lamothe received 62 votes in favour, 3 against and two abstentions. He was approved by the Senate in April by a 19-3-1 vote.

President Michel Martelly sent his “warmest congratulations” to the Chamber of Deputies, saying the move would help the Executive in its struggle to bring change and a better life for Haiti’s population, according to a statement.

Lamothe had previously served as Haiti’s Minister of Foreign Affairs.

Lamothe has now been confirmed by both houses of Parliament. He was designated by Martelly in the wake of the resignation of Garry Conille as Prime Minister.

Conille had only served as the Prime Minister since October.

Martelly, reaffirming his confidence in Lamothe, said he believed the country’s development inevitably requires unity and understanding between all branches of government.
