Caribbean Tourism Organization Continues Sustainability Push With New Hire

The Caribbean Tourism Organization has named Trinidadian sustainability expert Narendra Ramgulam as its new Deputy Director of Sustainable Tourism, a key leadership role created to support the CTO’s evolving vision for sustainable and regenerative tourism development.
Ramgulam’s appointment — approved by the CTO Board of Directors — marks a significant step in the organization’s Reimagine Plan, which aims to build a more resilient, inclusive and environmentally conscious regional tourism sector.
“We are pleased to welcome Narendra to this new leadership role,” said CTO Secretary-General Dona Regis-Prosper. “His contributions over the past year have been instrumental, and we are confident that his expertise, innovation and deep passion for sustainability will continue to elevate our work across the region.”
Ramgulam joined the CTO in 2023 as a Sustainable Tourism Consultant, where he has played a pivotal role in shaping strategic initiatives for member countries. In his new capacity, he will oversee the development and implementation of regional sustainability programs, guide policy creation, promote best practices, and measure the impact of these efforts across the Caribbean.
His appointment reflects the CTO’s broader commitment to positioning the region at the forefront of global sustainable tourism — a move that has gained urgency amid climate pressures and shifting travel trends.
A seasoned academic and tourism leader, Ramgulam previously served as Director of Tourism Product Development and Destination Management at the Tobago Tourism Agency Limited, where he was credited with leading sustainability-focused initiatives that garnered international recognition. His leadership also helped enhance Tobago’s reputation as a safe and resilient destination during the COVID-19 pandemic.
He is a published researcher with 13 academic publications and has held senior academic positions at the University of the West Indies’ St. Augustine campus.
Ramgulam will officially assume his new role in mid-August, based at CTO Headquarters in Barbados.
