Jamaica Just Got an Upgraded US Travel Advisory: “A Great Step Forward”

By: Alexander Britell - May 31, 2025 - 8:36 pm

Last year’s US Travel Advisory led to a slowdown in tourist arrivals to Jamaica. But in what’s hoped to be a major shift, the US State Department just upgraded Jamaica’s rating.

Jamaica’s travel advisory has improved from Level 3 to Level 2, meaning the US considers the safety situation on the island to have improved.

What does the change mean?

Level 2 travel advisories mean “exercise increase caution” when traveling to a destination. Level 3, where Jamaica was until this week, suggests tourists “reconsider travel.”

That’s a significant change.

So how do local hoteliers feel about it?

“This is more than a meaningful update, it’s a powerful affirmation of what travelers, travel advisors, and the people of Jamaica have always known: Jamaica is one of the safest, most vibrant, and genuinely welcoming destinations on earth” said Adam Stewart, Executive Chairman of Sandals Resorts International. “What makes this island unforgettable is its people, their warmth, resilience, and deep pride in sharing their culture and home. This renewed guidance plays an important role in restoring global confidence and as always, we look forward to welcoming travelers from around the world with open arms.”

Christopher Issa, CEO of S Hotels in Jamaica (which has two resorts on the island in Kingston and Montego Bay, respectively), said it was a “great step forward” for the island.

What is Jamaica’s reaction?

“While Jamaica has always been considered a safe and welcoming destination for our guests, this update only reinforces what we and our international visitors have known all along – that Jamaica offers a world-class and unforgettable experience,” he said.

That was echoed by Jamaica Prime Minister Andrew Holness, who said the revision “reflects the hard work of our security forces and Government agencies.”

“We have been deliberate and data-driven in our approach to reducing crime and improving the safety of our people. Jamaica remains one of the most vibrant and welcoming destinations in the world, and we are pleased that our progress is being recognized.”

The change had been hinted at by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on his visit to Jamaica earlier this year, and now it has come to fruition.

Heading for a Jamaica vacation?

Planning a trip to Jamaica? Fares are pretty attractive right now, with Spirit to Montego Bay as owner as $222 roundtrip, and Caribbean Airlines out of Fort Lauderdale at $378, among others.

Where to stay? If it’s Montego Bay you’re flying to, check out our guide to the best places to stay in Montego Bay.

If you’re looking beyond Mobay, we highly recommend the funky, cool beach town of Negril, where stunning cliffs join perfect white sand. In Negril, I absolutely love the Rockhouse hotel.
