Crash boat beach. The lighthouse ruins. The golf in Isabela. The Rincon Surf School. The Wishing Well. The mofongo. The West Coast of Puerto Rico remains the island’s best-kept secret, a world away from the bustle of San Juan (and one of the top surfing destinations in the Caribbean).

This weekend, it’s about to get even easier to reach, with new nonstop flights on Frontier Airlines.

The low-cost carrier has a new nonstop flight between Miami and the Rafael Hernandez Airport in Aguadilla, the gateway to the west of Puerto Rico, with a May 24 start date.

The new flight is operating once every week, with service on Saturdays, Frontier confirmed.

The airline has made Puerto Rico a huge priority in recent years, particularly the post-pandemic period, with a wave of new flights from the mainland United States and, perhaps most notably, its increasing intra-regional presence out of San Juan.

The latter has seen Frontier launch a number of new nonstop flights between San Juan and Caribbean destinations like Barbados, Cancun and Antigua, among others.

So what about prices?

You can fly the new Miami-Aguadilla route for fares starting as low as $89.

The west coast hotspot in Puerto Rico has several other flights from the mainland, including JetBlue from Orlando, New York and Fort Lauerdale as well.

So what about where to stay? If you want to stay within Mayaguez proper, there’s a TRYP by Wyndham with a cool pool for just $134 per night. In Rincon, where I stayed and loved its fun, surf-town feel, your best bet is the beloved Rincon Beach Resort, which has a great infinity-edge pool and sea views. Rooms from $181 right now).
